The Arts

Drama Program

Theatre opportunities are available for University Laboratory School students beginning in early elementary and continuing through high school.

Students in kindergarten through 5th grade are invited to audition for and perform in the all-elementary school musical held annually in the fall semester.  From Willy Wonka to The Little Mermaid, cast members have delighted audiences with sold-out performances year after year.

Beginning in middle school, students may audition for the middle and high school musical held annually in the spring semester. Cast members perform under the direction of master ULS music, vocal and theatre instructors and learn dance choreography from local talent.

In high school, students are invited to join the Honors Theatre Club. This club meets weekly to hone performance and improvisation skills and to learn technical theatre skills, such as set design and construction as well as lighting. The club  develops and performs lunch Cabaret Theatre shows for students and faculty several times per year and presents a full Theatre Showcase, comprised of song, dance and skits - some of which are written and directed by the students themselves, at the end of each year. Honors Theatre is a chapter of the International Thespians Society.

An International Baccalaureate Theatre class is available to juniors and seniors. This two-year course focuses on the study and performance of world traditions of theatre ranging from puppetry to monologue and plays.
