University Laboratory School at ISTE + ASCD 2026!

This week, Alex Bailey, Kim Carr, Trisha Fos, Laura Heroman, Shannon Hannaman, Brian Simpson, Taylor Rising, Solveig Turner, and AImee Welch-James represented University Laboratory School at the ISTE + ASCD Annual Conference, one of the world's premier education conferences. The conference brings together educators, school leaders, and innovators to explore the latest research, instructional strategies, educational technology, and leadership practices through inspiring keynote speakers, hands-on workshops, and collaborative learning experiences. Our team is excited to bring back fresh ideas, innovative strategies, and practical tools to enhance teaching and learning across our campus.

We are especially proud of Shannon Hannaman, ULS 1st grade Instructor; Nikole Blanchard, ULS Head of Educational Technology & Innovation; and Debbie Heroman, Associate Professor of Professional Practice in Educational Technology at LSU, who presented "From Campus to Classroom: Strengthening Preservice Teaching Through Local Collaborations." Their session highlighted the power of local partnerships in preparing future educators and strengthening the connection between universities and schools, showcasing the impact of collaboration between University Laboratory School and LSU.

Adding to an already outstanding conference, Nikole Blanchard was honored with one of ISTE's highest recognitions—the Make It Happen Award. This prestigious award celebrates educators who inspire meaningful change by empowering teachers, fostering strong relationships with students, embracing innovation, and using technology to create engaging, student-centered learning experiences.

We are incredibly proud of all of our educators for representing University Laboratory School through professional learning, leadership, and service. Their commitment to continuous growth ensures they return with new ideas and inspiration that will benefit our students and school community.

This week, our rising 5th–8th grade Math Counts campers have been stretching their problem-solving skills through puzzles, challenges, teamwork, and real-world math experiences across the U-High campus. Inspired by Art of Problem Solving (AoPS) and MATHCOUNTS, campers are discovering that mathematics goes far beyond the classroom.

Led by instructor Rebecca Nguyen, campers are building confidence, perseverance, and a love for mathematical thinking.

The campers' final big project is to create a UHS Campus Math Trail that can be used by teachers and students throughout the school year. Students are exploring campus landmarks and designing math problems for a variety of grade levels connected to the people, places, and things that make UHS unique. Their goal is to create both a map and guide that will allow others to follow the trail and solve math challenges along the way.

We can't wait to see the finished Math Trail and the impact it will have on the UHS community! 💛🖤

✨ Unique Experiences Around Every Corner This Week! ✨

At Summer at the U, learning comes to life through hands-on adventures, special guests, and one-of-a-kind LSU connections. Here's a look at some of our campers' favorite moments from the week! 💛🖤

LSU Connections:
🔹 Visit to LSU Dining Hall 459 Commons with Executive Chef Chad Galiano for a behind-the-scenes look at culinary arts and hospitality.
🔹 Exploration of the world of insects with the LSU Entomology Club.
🔹 Trip to the Manship Theater for a dress rehearsal of 101 Dalmatians, where campers learned about the many roles involved in bringing a production to life. Special shoutout to our own Dana Lux for leading the theater boot camp, Evie Trahan for running the sound board, and Emery McCandless for choreographing the entire show!

Special Guests:
⭐ Leader in early childhood STEM education and author of Making and Tinkering with STEM, Cate Heroman
⭐ Beekeeper Jim VanHook
⭐ Card trick connoisseur Sam Breaux, who left campers amazed with his incredible magic and sleight-of-hand skills

These unique experiences are just a glimpse of the adventures, learning opportunities, and memories being made every day at Summer at the U! ☀️💛🖤

One of the unique opportunities at Summer at the U is our Cub Counselor program! 💛🖤

Cub Counselors are UHS high school students who apply and are hired to work as part of our summer camp staff. Throughout the summer, they gain valuable leadership and job experience while helping campers learn, play, create, and explore.
Whether assisting instructors, leading activities, encouraging campers, or jumping into the fun, Cub Counselors play an important role in making Summer at the U a positive experience for everyone.

We're proud to provide opportunities for our students to develop workplace skills, build confidence, and serve as role models for our younger campers. ☀️
