This week we're celebrating Joe Carleton, a U-High Cub who turned his love of the stage into a thriving career in film and theatre, right back here in Baton Rouge.
From playing Aloysius Butterball the Turkey in his first U-High musical to founding the Baton Rouge Underground Film Festival and Mid City Civic Theatre, Joe's path has taken him through a lot of stages — literally. He studied Acting and Lighting Design at LSU, joined the acting company at Barter Theatre, toured playing Peter Pan, and associate produced for Amazon, BBC, and ITV before betting on himself and moving home to Baton Rouge in 2023.
Since then, Joe has produced 10 feature films, revived a local community theatre, and launched the city's premier film festival, all while working as a Tax Professional at Carleton & Company CPAs, his family's local firm. His debut feature as Unoriginal Films, Beware the Box Folk, premieres at the 2026 New Orleans Film Festival on October 27th at the Broad Theatre.
At U-High, Joe participated in Show Choir, Choir, Theatre, Cross Country, and the IB Programme. Outside of U-High, he competed in Olympic-style weightlifting. He credits Ms. Hayes and Dr. Pinto with helping him find his voice as an artist, and says the friends he made in high school are still some of his closest today, because "you cannot have a great career without a great support system."
His advice to current Cubs, in his own words: "Run to the fear. If you're scared or nervous, it's probably because you care deeply about that thing."
Congrats also to Joe on his recent engagement to Lauren Cabrera! As Joe puts it: "I have found great success in creating art in my hometown and home state." We're proud to call him a Cub.

We are so excited to kick off our very first Alumni Spotlight with an incredible Cub success story of Dylan Rousselle!
Dylan is a U-High graduate and now the Drum Major for the 133rd Edition of the Golden Band from Tigerland! A four-year member of the Drumline, Dylan is also pursuing a degree in Biological Engineering, proving that Cubs can excel both on the field and in the classroom.
We asked Dylan what it means to lead Tiger Band as Drum Major, and his answer said it all:
"It means the absolute world. The LSU Tiger Band is one of the most recognizable organizations not only on LSU's campus but in the nation. It is a true honor to be able to hold the title and to have the opportunity to do my best to represent the band and the university. With all the noise surrounding LSU football this season, it means even more this year to show who we truly are and continue to inspire those that support us."
Dylan also shared how meaningful it was to come back and visit the ULS band department that helped shape his musical journey:
"It did feel a little nostalgic. I got to catch up with Mrs. Perry, who taught me recorder before middle school at U-High before she left. That was a cool full circle moment."
And for our current Cubs, Dylan had this advice as a 13-year Cub himself:
"You truly never know what opportunities are around the corner. Make the most of your time before you really become on your own in college and life after that. Additionally, be passionate about what you love. Don't let others steer you away from that — it is what will allow you to open doors you didn't even know were there."
Tiger pride runs in the family — and so does Cub pride! Dylan's brother, Dalton Rousselle, is also a ULS alumnus and a fellow member of the Golden Band. Dalton is a sophomore studying Chemical Engineering and plays tenors on the drumline.
Congratulations, Dylan and Dalton! We are so proud to call you both Cubs! 🐯🎶
