Flu Update
The
Lab School community has experienced confirmed cases of
H1N1. We will keep you updated here on our website. This
is important for you to remember: For most people who
contract Influenza A and/or H1N1, the illness has been
mild as compared to traditional seasonal flu. According
to medical sources, influenza viruses are primarily
spread through coughing or sneezing. A person may also
become infected by touching something with the flu virus
on it, then touching their mouth or nose, as studies
have shown that influenza virus can survive for up to
2-8 hours on environmental surfaces, such as books,
doorknobs, keyboards, phones and iPods. You can get the
most up-to-date information concerning H1N1 at the CDC
flu web site,
www.flu.gov.
Some
simple rules to follow from the CDC are:
1.
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you
cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue away after you use it.
2.
Wash
your hands often with soap and water, especially after
you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are
also effective.
3.
Avoid
touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that
way.
4.
Try
to avoid close contact with people who are sick.

National Board Certification
Congratulations to our newest National Board Certified Teachers: Panay Burland, Sheri Loy, and Steve Babcock
Finalist for State High School Math
Teacher of the Year
Congratulations to Aimee Welch for being
named a finalist for the State High
School Math Teacher of the Year at the
recent LATM/LSTA State Conference.
ACT Composite Score
U-High's ACT composite score has risen
again and continues to outpace both
State and National scores by a
considerable margin. In 2009 our ACT
composite score rose from 24.1 to 24.2.
The State average is 20.1 and the
National score is 21.1. Needless to say,
we are very proud of the Class of 2009
and, equally, of our faculty and their
superb preparation.
Boys and Girls State
Amanda Hardy, rising U-High senior, was
recently elected Governor of Louisiana
Girls State. It’s the highest honor a
participant can achieve during the
seven-day program. Approximately 1,100
girls from across the state
participated. The number of delegates a
school is allowed to send is based on
the size of the school. Amanda’s
achievement is certainly something
U-High can be proud of.
All 4 of our delegates did a great job.
Karin Schultz, U-high's other delegate
to Girls State, was elected City Public
Relations Officer; Chris Akers, delegate
of Boys State, was elected President of
the School Board; and Brandon Woolf, was
elected into the House of
Representatives.
