Why does the school need additional funds and doesn’t LSU support the Lab School?

It is important to know that although the Lab School is a part of LSU, we do not receive any direct funding from LSU. The Lab School’s resources are based on tuition and funds from the state’s Minimum Foundation Plan (MFP). These resources alone are not enough to maintain the high caliber programs – academic and extracurricular – all of you rightly expect from the University Laboratory School. Your gift to the Lab School will stay at the Lab School for the direct benefit of our programs and students.

The annual appeal provides:

  • an opportunity for parents, alumni, grandparents and friends to help fund the gap between the actual cost of a child’s education at the Lab School, and the tuition charged.
  • an opportunity for parents and alumni to be involved in development activities of the Foundation while spreading good news about the Lab School.
  • an opportunity for alumni, grandparents, former parents, friends and businesses to contribute to the betterment of the school.

How was the Foundation started?

The University Laboratory School Foundation was started by a group of concerned parents that realized the need for additional financial resources for the school. Having had experience with development programs at other high schools, these parents saw how such a program could benefit the Lab School. After several meetings with the LSU Foundation, the administration of the school, and the administration of the College of Education, a structure was set up and these same parents committed to funding the program. A part time development director was hired in 1998 to coordinate the Foundation’s efforts.

Is the Foundation a 501c3?

Yes, the University Laboratory School Foundation is a development program set up within the LSU Foundation for the exclusive benefit of the Lab School. All donations are tax-deductible as permitted by law.

What will the money raised through the annual appeal be used for?

In addition to supporting the operating expenses of the development office, the Foundation Board receives a number of requests each year from the administration and faculty. See Project and Programs Funded Since 1999 for a list of items funded.

Will there be any publication of how the money is spent?

Yes. The Foundation regularly reports its annual activities in the Foundation’s newsletter, The Cub Roar.

What is the goal for Annual Appeal?

PARTICIPATION! – We believe that by encouraging everyone to give what they can, we will be very successful (No gift is too small). Also - by using this philosophy over the past three years, we increased our giving by 125%.

How does the Annual Appeal fit with other school fundraisers?

ULS clubs and classes will continue to have their fundraising activities with the monies being designated for a specific purpose, i.e. student travel. The Development Office coordinates the calendar for all such fundraisers.

How much should we give?

Only you can decide, but we ask that you make the Lab School one of your top charitable priorities while your children are enrolled. Arrangements can be made to spread your giving over a number of monthly installments.

Can I remain anonymous?

Yes. Please let us know today and we will be happy to make sure your name is not included in our recognition listing.

What are matching gifts?

Many companies will match an employee’s gift to any non-profit. Some match one, two or even three times the your gift amount. How to double...your gift to the Lab School!

You can literally double, triple or quadruple the value of your gift if you are employed by a participating matching gift company. In fact, over a thousand companies offer varying levels of corporate match for their employees, spouses, and retirees. Best of all, you are recognized for the full amount of your own gift plus any resulting corporate match. To make your contribution grow, simply obtain a matching gift form from your company’s personnel or community relations office, fill it out and send it in with your contribution.
