The University Laboratory School offers a comprehensive reading program that links reading and writing with an emphasis on the five key components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, vocabulary development, and fluency. Beginning in kindergarten and continuing throughout the elementary grades, students are actively engaged in the writing process throughout the day. The emphasis placed upon the integration of reading and writing across the curriculum provides students with a solid literacy foundation.
Two highly qualified literacy coaches oversee the implementation of literacy instruction. Instructors and teaching associates receive on-going training in best practices for literacy instruction. Within each classroom, students receive small and whole group reading instruction using a variety of materials including leveled texts, big books, non-fiction texts and basal readers. Thanks to the generosity of the University Laboratory School Foundation, the elementary division is fortunate to have an extensive collection of reading materials housed in the school’s Literacy Library. In addition to regular classroom instruction, the reading specialists provide individual and/or small group instruction to students needing additional reading support.
For further information about the elementary division’s literacy program you may contact either of the school’s literacy coaches.
